Animal fat and organic waste, such as waste water sludge and manure, are potential 'raw materials' for making biodiesel, the production of which will therefore reduce the total quantity of waste. Biodiesel is produced, for example, from waste oil or animal fat and this makes it possible to use waste products from the food sector in energy production.
Biodiesel can cover 8.2% of consumption Conversion of animal fat to biodiesel using available chemical processes can be the source of at least 100,000 tons/year, corresponding to 3.8 Petajoules (PJ). It has been estimated that waste water sludge can be the source of 2.7 PJs worth of biodiesel.
As Denmark’s annual energy consumption of diesel for road transport is 79.7 PJ (2005), biodiesel from the two sources mentioned above has potential to meet 8.2 % of Denmark’s diesel consumption for road transport.
The majority of energy consumer for transport is energy consumed for road transport. Furthermore, consumption of diesel oil for road transport has risen sharply since 2002. Diesel currently supplies 49.1 % of energy used in road transport in Denmark (source: Energistyrelsen (Danish Energy Agency) |
